Hamilton, New Zealand – The Indian Cultural Society (Waikato) Inc. is proud to announce the 36th Waikato Diwali Mela, returning bigger and better than ever before!

Set to take place on Saturday, 31st October 2026 at Innes Common, Hamilton Lake, this year’s festival will run from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Following last year’s massive turnout, this much-loved annual event is expected to draw a record-breaking crowd of more than 20,000 people, securing its place as one of the Waikato region’s largest and most vibrant cultural gatherings.

The Diwali Mela will feature an incredible, non-stop lineup of cultural performances, including traditional regional dances, energetic music, and storytelling. A central highlight of the evening will be the ceremonial lighting of the ‘Diya’—a symbolic tradition representing the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

The Spirit of Diwali

Known worldwide as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, each honoring their own rich traditions. For Hindus, it commemorates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya. For Sikhs, it marks the historic release of Guru Hargobind Ji, while for Jains, it signifies the spiritual enlightenment of Lord Mahavira. Despite these different origins, Diwali universally unites us all through its message of hope, renewal, and community harmony.

Food, Fireworks, and Community

Festival-goers can explore a bustling selection of food stalls offering authentic Indian cuisine—from savory street food classics like samosas and pakoras to beloved sweets including jalebi and gulab jamun. The evening will build toward a breathtaking finale: a spectacular fireworks display over Hamilton Lake, lighting up the night sky and creating a stunning reflection across the water for families and friends to enjoy together.
